Cable management still critical when dealing with patch cords
02/04/2011
In many data centers, managing and routing patch cables is an afterthought, according to a recent report from Cabling Installation and Maintenance.
While this oversight is somewhat understandable, according to the report, disorganized patch cable establishments can restrict a network's performance capacity and make it more difficult to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
As a result, companies should develop a patch cable management and routing scheme prior to installation, the report said.
This is possible by dividing the equipment rack into multiple sections and creating a plan to intelligently install patch cables within vertical and horizontal sectors. According to the report, this keeps patch cable installations organized, maximizing the equipment's potential and allowing the network to run at optimal speeds.
Cable routing can be critical to a network's overall performance. According to a recent report from Area Development Online, the relative standardization of cable routing and management systems in modular data centers is a main reason they have become popular in recent years. The inherent design concepts behind modular data centers is conducive to efficient cable management solutions.
