Companies emphasizing network performance

Businesses are handling rapidly rising amounts of data and network equipment is forced to respond by working at peak capacity most of the time. However, these measures may not be enough, and many companies are beginning to sacrifice security to meet their network performance needs.

According to a recent Crossbeam Systems survey, most IT professionals have turned to sacrificing security protocols to improve network performance. Overall, 90 percent of respondents said they experienced some form of trade-off involving security and performance. Eighty-one percent said they have sacrificed security at some point to improve network capabilities.

While the vast majority of respondents have prioritized performance over security, 67 percent of respondents said security is still more important than impact on network capabilities when choosing a security solution.

"The survey results are another proof-point for what has become a growing issue in the industry - the challenge of managing security performance," said Chris Christiansen, program vice president for security products and services for IDC.

Network performance is becoming especially important as more businesses invest heavily in cloud computing solutions. A recent Computerworld report said companies that deploy cloud solutions need to make sure they manage supporting technologies, such as networking tools, to maximize the cloud's impact.
