Ethernet offers operational versatility
08/09/2011
A growing number of businesses are identifying versatility as a key element of network infrastructure because internet connection technologies are rapidly changing. According to a recent AutomationWorld report, Ethernet has the potential to offer the operational efficiency that many companies need.
The report said Friesen's. found itself in a difficult position because its manufacturing centers required more efficient network capabilities, but the company could not easily make upgrades. In response, Friesen's Inc. installed a new Ethernet infrastructure that provided the performance and flexibility necessary to adapt to a wide variety of network configurations.
The report explained that Ethernet architectures make it relatively easy for companies to deploy a diverse range of network equipment. As a result, more businesses are turning to Ethernet instead of conventional field bus ports and other forms of infrastructure.
Henry Loos, controls and application engineer for Applied Robotics, told the news source Ethernet networks often enable off-the-shelf appliances instead of forcing engineers to customize networking tools.
Ethernet is continually becoming more popular, especially in industrial settings. According to a recent SA Instrumentation & Control report, industrial Ethernet's rise has has helped the technology mature and offer improved value to users.
