File transfer industry making progress on IPv6 migration
06/13/2011
IPv6 migration is critical for almost every industry. However, the file transfer sector faces unique IPv6 challenges making it an ideal example of how complex IPv6 migration can be.
A recent File Transfer Consulting study found the majority of file transfer service providers have made significant progress moving toward IPv6 compliance. Despite this progress, the sector still has significant work to do before completing the IPv6 migration, according to the study.
The issue faced by file transfer companies is one that will likely impact other industries as well - interoperability. The study found many providers have deployed IPv6-compliant systems, but are experiencing problems getting network equipment to function compatibly.
Andy White, CTO for File Transfer Consulting, explained many companies approach IPv6 adoption as a process that focuses only on routers and switches. However, almost all networking tools play a part in IPv6 migration and need to be compatible.
The study said this is especially important for file transfer systems because they often require multiple internet connections.
IPv6 migration is becoming a key issue for businesses of all varieties. A recent Neustar report explained cloud computing is among the key factors fueling IPv6 adoption and warned that companies should take a strategic approach to migration.
