Home networking advances on horizon
12/23/2011
The IEEE Hybrid Networking 1905.1 working group is making strides toward its goal of creating interoperability between traditional home networking technologies. The group recently released a draft version of the new standard, CED Magazine reported.
According to the news source, the standard's goal is to integrate the IEEE 1901 standard for HomePlug with the IEEE MoCA 1.1, IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.3 Ethernet guidelines. Developing systems to support interoperability between these technologies is becoming key to support growing user demands for advanced network capabilities that support such systems as home automation, video streaming and application delivery.
Citing the IEEE working group's site, the news source explained the new standard creates interoperability through an abstraction layer that is connected to a dynamic interface selection system. This infrastructure handles data packets from both underlying foundational network systems and upper protocol layers.
This new standard could prove essential, as home network demands are rising quickly. According to a recent FierceTelecom report, the home networking sector is shifting as users raise their performance demands and push for network equipment that can support diverse service needs.
