IPv6 getting a greater sense of urgency

Any new technology will take a few years of deployment before becoming mainstream. While this may be the case for IPv6 as well, there are clear indications that many companies are moving quickly to embrace the new address protocols.

At first glance, it seems quite clear that IPv6 will come of age quickly, as a recent itBusiness report explains most service providers can no longer acquire new IPv4 addresses, as the large repository of such addresses has run dry.

However, it is important to remember that most service providers still have plenty of IPv4 addresses already under their contro, and may not need to switch to IPv6 for at least a couple of years.

IPv6 adoption could also be slowed by technologies that will allow IPv6 transmissions, but are not fully-compliant with native IPv6. Jag Bains, director of network operations for Peer 1 Hosting, told the news source the company hopes more businesses switch to IPv6 quickly, but expects it to be a few years before most organizations become fully-compliant.

A recent InformationWeek reports supports the belief that companies need to move rapidly to support IPv6. The industry has known IPv4 addresses would run dry since close to 2000, and it is now time for service providers to embrace the migration, the report said.
