IPv6 security implications go beyond network issues

IPv6 migration represents a systematic shift in how users access the internet by allowing direct, device-to-device communication. This presents a number of security issues that go beyond the network-related implications of the new standard.

According to a recent SecurityInfoWatch report, connected device use is already progressing to a point where countless factories, data centers and other facilities are using sensors and other monitoring tools that connect to the internet to manage temperature control, ventilation and other key systems.

As IPv6 becomes more prominent, the report said such devices will not only become more prevalent, they will also be able to communicate more quickly because they can connect directly to other devices.

However, this rapid communication poses security risks because such quick responses can lead to resolutions that do not take all of the factors into account. Therefore, IPv6 security will also need to ensure that all devices are able to quickly communicate with each other so automated systems respond appropriately to problems, the report said.

Such adjustments to security procedures are becoming critical because IPv6 is becoming more urgent. A recent Network World report said 2012 will be the year that IPv6 investments become critical in nature.
