IT spending patterns set to change in 2011
01/21/2011
The global IT market is set to continue expanding in 2011, but spending patterns may change considerably, according to a recent report published by research firm Gartner.
Changing growth patterns within the industry may reflect a shift away from hardware-centric IT architectures toward cloud computing and other IT solutions that rely heavily on network equipment and connectivity.
According to Gartner, growth in spending on computer hardware and telecom equipment is expected to slow in 2011. Computer hardware spending will grow 7.5 percent, compared to 8.9 percent in 2010, while telecom equipment spending, which grew 14 percent in 2010, is predicted to grow 9.1 percent in 2011.
Growth in spending on enterprise software, meanwhile, is expected to increase from 6.1 to 7.5 percent, while spending on IT services growth will increase from 2.5 to 4.6 percent, the report predicts.
The report's predictions may indicate many companies are adopting VoIP, cloud-based applications and other services that utilize centralized data centers and rely on quality data cables, network routers and other networking tools to maintain speed and reliability.
A recent PCWorld report pointed to a phenomenon that may be related to Gartner's predictions. According to the report, a growing number of employees choose to use their own electronic devices for work purposes.
