Liquid becoming critical in green IT initiatives
04/28/2011
Liquid could be the future of energy efficient IT systems in the data center. Traditionally, businesses have had to deploy expensive, power-hungry cooling systems to protect hardware in the data center. However, hardware prices are decreasing, making it important that companies spend less to maintain that hardware.
Becasue cost-effective cooling systems for the data center are rare, businesses are increasingly deploying liquid-based systems to keep servers and other hardware running at optimal temperatures.
Typical liquid cooling systems involve using small amounts of water to regulate hardware temperature. New solutions are emerging that use special heat-absorbent liquid to draw thermal energy away from components that are safely submerged in the fluid.
This method is not only efficient because it keeps servers cool, it is also easier to draw heat out of. Using advanced sensors, monitors and network equipment, companies can create a system to draw heat from the cooling fluid and use it in other parts of the facility.
According to Reuters, submerged liquid cooling systems are still somewhat rare. However, startup companies are emerging to meet the sector's need and provide a significant area for potential growth in the green IT industry.
