Network and data security market on the rise

A recent report from ABI Research found more companies are investing in networking tools to manage their network and data security systems.

According to the report, the overall network and data security industry, which includes unified threat management systems, secure routers, virtual private networks, firewalls and network access control systems, is currently positioned to exceed $10 billion in value by 2016.

Short-term growth is also expected in the industry, as its 11 percent growth in 2010 indicated a quick response to the early stages of economic recovery. Overall, the market's value stood at $6 billion at the end of 2010.

Overall, the report attributes the growing demand for network and data security to increased networking complexity, cloud services creating new data center needs, a growing number of network-ready endpoints and business users accessing consumer applications from the workplace.

"Vendors are responding to the market’s n eeds through portfolio expansion, and by offering multiple delivery models," said Subha Rama, senior analyst for ABI Research.

Security is not the only factor having an impact on new networking purchases. According to a recent ComputerWorld report, outdated network equipment is one of the most crippling issues within networks, as old Ethernet ports can reduce the performance of almost every other component.
