Network traffic set to quadruple by 2015
06/02/2011
Significant investments in new network equipment could be on the horizon, as Cisco's recent Visual Networking Index Forecast anticipates online traffic to quadruple by 2015.
According to the study, the expanding amount of traffic will be generated by a number of factors, including a rapidly growing number of connected devices. By 2015, Cisco anticipates approximately 15 billion internet-connected devices will be in circulation. That amounts to approximately two times the population of the world.
While the amount of traffic expansion expected in the next few years is significant, most of the growth is anticipated towards the end of the period. Between 2014 and 2015, internet traffic is expected to rise by 200 exabytes, the same amount of traffic generated in all of 2010.
"The explosive growth in internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimizing and monetizing visual, virtual and mobile internet experiences," said Suraj Shetty, vice president of worldwide service provider marketing for Cisco.
The explosive growth of online traffic could become even more complicated, as many users will be converting to IPv6. According to a recent Campus Technology report, many U.S. organizations are not worried about running out of IPv4 addresses, but are concerned about being able to accept signal from IPv6 devices.
