New Ethernet standard a boon for data centers
03/17/2011
Data centers are facing a growing amount of traffic that threatens to create inefficiencies by overloading switches and other equipment with more information than they can handle.
According to a recent DataCenter Dynamics report, the IEEE's new 40/100G standard could be the solution to the overwhelming amount of data sent through storage area networks and other data center networking infrastructure.
One of the major advantages of the new standard, the report said, is its ability to replace link aggregation and more effectively distribute data packets throughout the data center and to connected facilities.
The new 40/100G standard is also important in data centers because it can simplify infrastructure, the report said. Because data centers typically handle traffic in the forms of inter-processor communication, SAN and fiber channel over Ethernet, 10G Ethernet required complex deployment to handle the protocols. With 40/100G, data centers can converge their Ethernet infrastructure.
Advanced Ethernet technologies are becoming pervasive in both data center and enterprise environments. It should come as no surprise that the new 40/100G standard will be the primary talking point at the upcoming IEEE Plenary Event in Singapore, InfoTech Spotlight reports.
