New IEEE standard coming on heels of 100G

The 40 to 100 Gigabit per second standard was only ratified last year, and many companies have yet to invest in the new technological system because they cannot afford its cost. Despite the 100G standard's relative youth, the IEEE is already working on its successor, 400G.

In an interview with Computing.co.uk, Henry Wasik, chief executive for Force10 Networks, said getting started on the 400G standard is important because some organizations are already maximizing 100G establishments and require networking tools to support more bandwidth.

Furthermore, Wasik explained the IEEE's standards can take years to configure, making it critical to start quickly to develop a standard that will be relevant three or four years in the future.

"IEEE 400Gbit/s is a lot of bandwidth for a single network connection, and the reason they want to get started now is because of the cycle times to get these standards approved," Wasik told the news source.

Speaking at the recent Ethernet Technology Summit, industry expert Chris Cole said the IEEE's efforts to quickly develop 400G Ethernet could negate the need for 1 terabit Ethernet, and make a 1.4T standard a more viable solution.
