New standard and guide for interoperability of networking equipment and Smart Grid technology coming from the IEEE
01/21/2011
An IEEE study group recently announced a new P2030 standard designed to foster interoperability between networking equipment and Smart Grid technology. The group is also working to develop a new guide for the standard.
The IEEE Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation with the Electric Power System and End-Use Applications and Loads is designed to give guidance to organizations in the power engineering, communications and IT industries as all three sectors are vitally important in deploying Smart Grid technology.
"This week’s IEEE P2030 Working Group meeting will be critical in terms of arriving at a ballot-ready draft guide by March 2011, which was our original target when the working group formed in March 2009. We remain on track to publish IEEE P2030 in 2011," said Dick DeBlasio, chair of the IEEE P2030 working group, chief engineer at the National Renewable Energy Lab and IEEE Smart Grid liaison to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The IEEE could also be close to announcing a new LAN standard, as the Backplane and Copper Cabling study group will meet soon to research 100G Ethernet's impact on businesses and decide if a new standard needs to be developed, PC World reports.
