Sustainability can be achieved at the network level
07/07/2011
Green IT initiatives are becoming more important than ever because data centers are facing rapidly rising data consumption and infrastructure growth rates.
According to a recent Data Center Journal report, many organizations are investing heavily in efficiency to support the growing quantity of power consumed in their data centers.
One increasingly popular way to reduce energy consumption in the data center is through network equipment. As a result, the market for highly efficient networking tools is on the rise, the report said.
Among those tools are fixed form-factor core switches. A core switch connects the access layer switches, making sure data arrives at all of the correct destinations. However, a fixed form-factor core switch performs the same function using 95 percent less power to do so, the report said.
Fiber channel over Ethernet is also contributing to improved efficiency, according to the report, because it converges infrastructure so that network tasks can be completed using less equipment.
The need to upgrade data center network equipment stems from more than just efficiency. Data Center Knowledge reports IPv6 migration could have a major impact on data center operations, especially in terms of monitoring devices and sensors.
