WAN optimization fueling the cloud
03/17/2011
Businesses are increasingly establishing advanced networks based on high-performance cabling infrastructure to support the bandwidth needs of cloud computing and other new technologies.
While adding bandwidth is a popular solution that some businesses will definitely need to consider, a recent Network World report said new advances in WAN optimization are easing cloud networking needs.
According to the report, WAN optimization has grown from a tool to speed up WAN connections to a technology that could fuel cloud developments. This progression is happening because new WAN optimization deployments are able to operate within a server, improving application delivery between virtual machines.
By improving application and data transmission between virtual servers, WAN optimization is able to improve cloud performance at the source, making it easier to manage routing and delivery to the end user, the report said.
Industry expert Donato Buccella told the news source software-based WAN optimization is making it easier to deploy cloud solutions by simplifying IT infrastructure in branch offices.
WAN virtualization is another way to improve WAN performance for cloud environments. A separate Network World report explains WAN virtualization can be used to maximize a network's hardware and software-related capabilities to improve efficiency.
